Program Overview
A Community Paramedic (CP) is an advanced paramedic who works to increase access to primary and preventive care, reduce emergency department visits, and lower healthcare costs. To enroll in Minnesota North College’s Community Paramedic program, students must hold a current Paramedic certification, maintain CPR/BLS certification throughout the program, and have at least two years of field experience as a licensed paramedic.

Become a key player in post-hospital care.
Community Paramedics may play a key role in providing follow–up services after a hospital discharge to prevent hospital readmission. They can provide health assessments, chronic disease monitoring and education, medication management, immunizations and vaccinations, laboratory specimen collection, hospital discharge follow–up care and minor medical procedures.
A variety of career opportunities.
Graduates of the Community Paramedic program are prepared to make a real impact in their communities. They gain the knowledge and skills to define the role of a Community Paramedic, understand and teach the social determinants of health, and connect people to essential services through education and partnerships. Students learn to perform community mapping and health assessments, develop strategies to address local health needs, and build community capacity. In addition, graduates are trained to provide a variety of clinical interventions and share public health information that supports prevention programs relevant to EMS and community health.
