About This Program

The Child Development certificate is designed to provide practitioners with a foundation essential to become a highly qualified early childhood professional in a variety of early years settings. Practitioners will learn how to provide a safe and healthy, developmentally appropriate learning environment which promotes physical and intellectual competence and social and emotional growth. A focus on developing culturally appropriate and inclusive family partnerships with a commitment to professionalism will be introduced. Required components for the National Council for Professional Recognition CDA are embedded into the coursework and field experiences.

The Child Development diploma is designed to prepare individuals for employment in a wide variety of early childhood settings and provides critical components necessary to thrive in this high demand field. Coursework builds on learning acquired in the Child Development certificate and includes instruction in positive behavior guidance, special needs in early childhood, strategies for working with infants & toddlers and skill development in observation and assessment in the early childhood setting. The Child Development diploma can be applied to further studies in the Early Childhood AS or AAS degree programs.

Program Features

A Variety of Options

* The Child Development courses may be offered in various formats: in-person, synchronously via Zoom, or online.

* Field experiences are required, which means students are able to put their growing knowledge into practice right away.

* Required components for the National Council for Professional Recognition CDA are embedded into the coursework and field experiences.

* The Child Development diploma can be applied to further studies in the Early Childhood AS or AAS degree programs.

* Graduates of the Child Development certificate will be prepared to apply to the National Council for Professional Development for the internationally recognized Child Development Associate (CDA).

Career Opportunities

A growing field

Early Childhood is an in-demand career field according to Minnesota's Department of Labor & Industry and the CDA credential is an internationally-recognized basic qualification for early childhood professionals.

NOTE: Students enrolling in the Child Development and Early Childhood Education programs must be willing to obtain and pass a Criminal Background check.
