Program Overview

The Electrical Maintenance program is unique in that it covers an array of employment opportunities in the electrical field. Students learn electrical theory applied to various areas, from residential and commercial construction to heavy industrial power and control systems, while gaining skills in diagnosing, testing, and repairing electrical equipment, motors, generators, renewable energy systems, and EV charging.

Reasons to Attend Minnesota North

Experience credit allowance.

Satisfactory completion of an approved two year electrical program fulfills the one year’s experience credit allowance (2000 hours) for a Class A journeyperson electrician, power limited technician, or maintenance electrician license.

An accredited program.

Hibbing’s Electrical Maintenance and Construction program is accredited by the Minnesota Department of Labor.

A variety of career paths.

Graduates will qualify for employment with processing companies, mining, industrial firms, large and small manufacturing companies, electrical contractors, power companies and building construction companies. They may choose to do general electrical maintenance, install power and lighting systems or work in instrumentation, automation, and solar/wind.

Local partnership opportunity

Each year, Habitat for Humanity partners with Minnesota North College Electrical Maintenance and Construction programs and Hibbing High School shop class to build a home. The project allows students to have a real-world learning experience, while also providing the homeowners with low-cost electrical installation.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home through volunteering.

EMPOWER eligible

Minnesota North College offers a unique support program. EMPOWER seeks to support the education of women entering high-wage, high-demand, non-traditional fields and roles. Assistance may be available for tuition, childcare, transportation, and study assistance. Learn more about EMPOWER here.
