About This Program

Students work directly under the supervision of a registered nurse to become familiar with the duties and responsibilities of a nursing assistant and home health aide. The program prepares students for jobs in a variety of settings such as nursing homes, home care agencies, hospitals, group homes, and semi-independent living facilities. The course includes classroom theory and testing as well as instruction on how to assist residents with hygiene, feeding, skin care, bed making, dressing, movement and other general assistance. Clinical experience at a local nursing home is included.

Program Details

Educational outcomes
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the qualities unique to the care of an again population.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of ethical behavior in health care.
  • Students will demonstrate skills in nursing care for the elderly in long-term and home care settings.
Testing and placement

Upon successful completion of NSG 1010 Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide, students are eligible to take the Minnesota Nursing Assistant written and skills test for placement on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, which lists the names of individuals who have completed an approved nursing assistant training and testing program and meet state and federal requirements to work in nursing homes and certified boarding care homes.

Career Opportunities

Preparation for a variety of settings

Graduates of the Nursing Assistant Program have excellent employment opportunities with nursing homes, hospitals, schools, private homes, foster care, and special care facilities. Students also have the option to further their training by enrolling in the Home Health Aide and Practical Nursing programs. The nursing assistant course is a prerequisite to both programs.
